Banyuwangi (ANTARA) — A joint Search and Rescue (SAR) team in Banyuwangi, East Java, successfully evacuated a hiker who slipped and suffered a broken left leg while climbing Mount Rante in the Ijen volcano area on Tuesday.

Head of the Banyuwangi SAR Office, I Made Oka Astawa, said the SAR operation to evacuate the hiker on Mount Rante was assisted by the Mount Rante Task Force, Banyuwangi Fire Service, Health Department, Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), personnel from the Licin Sector Police, the Ijen Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA), and local residents.

"The evacuation of hiker Ahmad Saoqilah (20), a resident of Sukosari Village, Sukowono District, Jember Regency, was carried out swiftly and effectively by the joint SAR team," he said in Banyuwangi on Tuesday.

Oka Astawa recounted that after the Banyuwangi SAR Office received information that a hiker had slipped and required assistance, the SAR team moved to the location in the Ijen volcano area.

When the SAR team arrived at the location, he said, they immediately coordinated with relevant parties to carry out the evacuation process in the rather steep terrain.

"The hiker was evacuated safely at 16:15 Western Indonesian Time, and after receiving basic medical treatment at the location, the victim was subsequently taken to Blambangan Regional General Hospital for further treatment," said Oka Astawa.

He urged hikers to always prioritise safety and to properly prepare their physical fitness and equipment before undertaking any climb.
