SAR Jember continues search for three missing fishermen off Paseban Beach

A joint SAR team has resumed the search for three fishermen who went missing after their boat was hit by a wave in the southern sea off Paseban Beach, Jember Regency, East Java.

“The search for the three missing fishermen was resumed this morning,” said Head of the Jember Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) Edy Budi Susilo on Thursday.

According to him, five fishermen departed from Puger Fishing Port to Meleman on Tuesday (18/8) at noon using a jaring-type vessel named “Pantes”.

“The boat was skippered by Samino along with four crew members, and upon arriving in the waters they began fishing activities,” Edy said.

The following day, Wednesday (19/8), the boat began its return journey and approached the shore in Paseban waters, Kencong District.

“The boat saw a light and thought it was another fishing vessel, but as it approached the shore, it was struck by a wave from the right side, causing the right hull to leak and the boat to capsize,” Edy explained.

As a result of the incident, one crew member was found dead, one was found alive, and three other fishermen were declared missing and have not yet been found.

The survivor was identified as Samino (65), the boat’s skipper, while the deceased victim was named Sahwiyanto (46). Both victims are residents of Puger Wetan Village, Puger District.

“Three victims are still being searched for, namely Mujai (58), Moh. Sholihin (34) and Samsul (45). All three are residents of Mojosari Village, Puger District,” he said.

Edy explained that the Jember BPBD is coordinating with the Jember Search and Rescue Post (Basarnas) and the Kencong Volunteer Team to search for the three missing victims.

“Today the joint SAR team will continue the SAR operation at Paseban Beach, Kencong District.”

He urged fishermen to remain cautious while fishing in the southern waters of Jember, as waves can sometimes be quite high and cause boats to capsize.
