SANY promotes heavy equipment electrification to reduce mining operational costs
SANY Group Indonesia is promoting the electrification of heavy equipment based on new energy as an option for the mining industry, which has the potential to reduce operational costs by up to 60 per cent and maintenance costs by up to 50 per cent.
Saanjay Shamdasani, Deputy General Manager and Director of Government Relations at SANY Group Indonesia, stated that the transformation of heavy equipment towards electrification is part of an effort to drive more efficient and low-carbon mining operations. “This technology has the potential to reduce operational costs by up to 60 per cent and maintenance costs by up to 50 per cent, while simultaneously supporting emission reductions and Indonesia’s 2060 net-zero emission target,” Saanjay said in a statement received in Jakarta on Friday.
According to him, this transformation will be carried out gradually, moving from hybrid technology to electric, supported by charging infrastructure, low-carbon energy, digital fleet management, and human resources with high-voltage electrical competence.
One of the technologies introduced by SANY is the SYZ445C-8REEV, which has a carrying capacity of up to 45 tonnes and a charging time of approximately 50 minutes. This technology is the first REEV (Range Extended Electric Vehicle) technology from SANY Group Indonesia to enter Indonesia, specifically intended for areas with limited power sources.
Beyond cost efficiency, electrification is beginning to receive responses from industry players in the mining and construction sectors. This is reflected in more than 500 units of heavy equipment ordered during the Mining Indonesia & Construction Indonesia 2026 event, including a single order of 150 mining trucks.
Saanjay noted that these orders indicate significant procurement activity amidst the development of the national mining and construction industries. During the exhibition, SANY also showcased several new energy-based heavy machines, ranging from 100-tonne class excavators and 100-tonne class mining trucks to electric wheel loaders, electric heavy-duty trucks, and electric dump trucks.
SANY assesses that the future implementation of such technology depends not only on product readiness but also on supporting infrastructure, after-sales service, local supply chains, and the ability to adapt technology to the specific conditions of each mining site. With the combination of cost efficiency and the need to reduce emissions, the electrification of heavy equipment has the potential to become a key part of the transformation of Indonesian mining operations towards more efficient and low-carbon technology usage.
