SANY Heavy Industry Indonesia and ITB Strengthen R&D and HR Development Collaboration
PT SANY Heavy Industry Indonesia is strengthening its commitment to developing technology and Indonesian talent through a collaboration with Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB).
The collaboration was formalised through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in the fields of education, research, technology development and human resources, which is expected to expand opportunities for Indonesian talent to gain industry experience while participating in the development of future technologies.
The MoU signing took place at the PT SANY Industry Machinery facility in the Mitra Karawang Industrial Estate, West Java. The memorandum was signed by ITB Vice Rector for Research and Innovation, Prof Lavi Rizki Zuhal, and President Director of PT SANY Heavy Industry Indonesia, Mr Li Dao.
The collaboration covers talent development through internship programmes, work-integrated learning, employment opportunities for ITB students and graduates, as well as various competency enhancement programmes.
In the field of research and innovation, SANY and ITB are also opening opportunities to develop joint research, knowledge and technology exchange, and the utilisation of research facilities.
The series of MoU signing activities also included a visit by the ITB delegation to SANY’s production facilities. During the visit, the delegation observed first-hand the heavy equipment manufacturing process and gained an overview of the application of production technology and the direction of SANY’s industrial development in Indonesia.
Chairman of SANY Asia Pacific, Mr Zhang Song, said that local talent development is an important part of SANY’s growth in Indonesia. Currently, around 91% of SANY’s workforce in Karawang are local workers.
Going forward, SANY wants to provide greater space for Indonesian talent not only to work in production facilities, but also to develop into professionals and leaders across various company functions.
According to him, the cooperation with ITB is a strategic step to expand access for students, academics and researchers to industry experience and global technological developments. The collaboration also opens opportunities for ITB talent to learn and collaborate with SANY’s research and development (R&D) centres and ecosystem in China.
“Indonesia is one of the important countries in SANY’s global network. We see Indonesia not only as a strategic market, but also as an important part of SANY’s future business, technology and investment development,” he said.
Zhang Song added that collaboration between universities and industry is increasingly important in line with SANY’s focus on globalisation, digitalisation and decarbonisation.
In the context of cooperation with ITB, SANY is committed to promoting research and development (R&D), technology transfer, and capacity building of Indonesian human resources.
This is in line with what was conveyed by Saanjay Shamdasani, Deputy General Manager/Director of Government Relations at SANY Indonesia. He said that the collaboration with ITB is expected to expand opportunities for Indonesian talent to gain experience and competencies relevant to industry needs.

This cooperation is also designed to be cross-disciplinary, leveraging the strengths of various fields of study at ITB according to industry needs and developments,” he said.
SANY Group is one of the world’s largest heavy equipment and construction machinery manufacturers from China. SANY develops various technologies to support the construction, mining, energy and smart manufacturing sectors.
In Indonesia, SANY has been developing manufacturing activities since 2021 through the construction of production facilities in the Karawang Industrial Estate, West Java.
In 2020, SANY also developed its first Lighthouse Factory outside China by applying digitalisation, automation and industrial internet in the production process.
SANY then expanded its industrial facilities in 2023 through the construction of phase II industrial estate to strengthen production capacity and support the needs of the national construction and mining sectors.
ITB Vice Rector for Research and Innovation, Prof Lavi Rizki Zuhal, welcomed the collaboration and appreciated the opportunity for ITB to become more familiar with SANY’s production facilities and development vision in Indonesia.
According to him, the cooperation with SANY is part of ITB’s efforts to expand its collaboration network with industry and academic partners in China that has been built over the past few years.
The collaboration began in 2023 through cooperation between ITB’s Faculty of Mining and Petroleum Engineering (FTTM) and PT Green Eco-Manufacture (GEM), which later developed to involve Central South University (CSU), China. One of the concrete results was the construction of a joint laboratory at ITB’s Jatinangor Campus.
“This success has attracted attention as a model of international collaboration between Indonesian universities, Chinese universities and industry. The cooperation that has been running has become a success story of how universities in Indonesia, universities in China and industry can work together. We want this collaboration model to be expanded, including with SANY,” he continued.
Through the collaboration with ITB, SANY hopes to strengthen the relationship between education and industry, while creating more space for Indonesian students, academics, researchers and professional talent to grow together with SANY’s technology ecosystem.
This cooperation is also expected to strengthen the education, research, innovation and human resource development ecosystem, while deepening academic and industrial relations between Indonesia and China.
