Sanitation drive in West Jakarta
JAKARTA (JP): South Jakarta Mayor Pardjoko has said that the
clean river campaign, currently being promoted at the mayoralty,
constitutes an integral part of the city's sanitation program.
"The sanitation problem is closely related with human living
so that we have to rid the rivers of garbage," Pardjoko said when
he led a sanitation operation at Pesanggrahan River on Sunday.
Pardjoko urged all residents of West Jakarta to adopt a clean
and healthy way of life in line with the national discipline
movement.
"We have to help the movement succeed, especially ahead of the
commemoration of the city's 468th anniversary and the 50th
independence of the Republic of Indonesia," he said.
Sunday's operation was held to clean up the Pesanggrahan River
bank, which is notoriously dirty due to the piling of garbage
along the river, especially around Ulujami and Cipulir markets.
Kebayoran Lama District Chief Andi Tahrim said that the
garbage at the river causes an annual flood in a number of
housing complexes along the river. (yns)
