Sangurejo Hamlet, Wonokerto Village, Turi District, Sleman, underwent field verification for the Sustainable Climate Village Programme (ProKlim Lestari) on Thursday (20/8/2026). The verification was conducted to assess the consistency between data uploaded in the National Registry System and conditions on the ground.

Chair of ProKlim Sangurejo Muhammad Chairul Huda said the field verification is part of the assessment for prospective ProKlim Lestari status. Data already uploaded in the National Registry System will be clarified against the actual conditions in Sangurejo Hamlet.

“The field verification is a combination of the 2024 Lestari programme candidates, namely clarifying between the data uploaded in the National Registry System and the conditions on the ground in Sangurejo Hamlet, whether these are truly real actions or merely administrative,” said Chairul.

According to him, the verification examined three actions: adaptation actions, mitigation actions, and institutional arrangements. The uploaded data will be clarified through field verification to ensure conditions on the ground match the data.

Chairul said sustainability is important in running the ProKlim programme. Protecting the environment, he said, is not merely about seeking awards.

“We must continue to be sustainable because protecting the environment is not just about seeking awards, that is only a bonus. We genuinely intend to protect the environment,” he said.

According to Chairul, when the environment is protected, nature will provide results and benefits for the community. Besides a cleaner and more organised environment, the community also gains economic improvements.

“We hold the principle that the environment we protect will be enjoyed by our children and grandchildren,” he said.

Deputy Regent of Sleman Danang Maharsa expressed hope that Sangurejo Village will not only run the programme when participating in competitions. Existing programmes are expected to continue providing benefits for the community after the assessment process is completed.

“We hope Sangurejo Village is not only active during competitions, but after this it can be economically beneficial for MSMEs and for nature. The Lestari Programme serves as a trigger,” said Danang.

Directorate of Climate Change Adaptation at the Ministry of Environment, Koko Wijanarko, said the Lestari predicate encourages the actions already undertaken by the community to continue. In addition, the community is also expected to have knowledge that can be shared with other locations.

“Lestari actually encourages them to keep going, the actions to keep running, and how they gain knowledge because ProKlim is essentially a medium for mutual cooperation,” he said.

Koko said ProKlim is not merely a competition. Once becoming a ProKlim Utama, the community has a responsibility to educate other locations as they have done.

According to him, once achieving the Lestari predicate, the community has formed a network that communicates with one another. The Ministry can guide and communicate technologies available in one place with the needs of another.

“Lestari is a burden for our friends because they bear responsibility. Receiving the Lestari trophy does not mean it is finished,” he said.

Koko explained that the award is given after they have successfully conducted mentoring in 10 locations. According to him, the mindset in ProKlim is not about seeking trophies, but because they have carried out mentoring, the Ministry then gives appreciation for what has been done.

Meanwhile, Panewu of Turi District Joko Susilo said Sangurejo has transformed from being known as a slum and impoverished hamlet into a ProKlim hamlet recognised at local, regional and national levels.

“From a slum and impoverished hamlet, it is now known as a ProKlim hamlet at local, regional and national levels,” he said.

According to Joko, the benefits of ProKlim are also felt by the community in social and economic terms. Many people from local areas, other provinces, and even abroad visit Sangurejo.

The community of Sangurejo Hamlet is visited daily by outside guests, including those exercising around the Sangurejo Embung. This condition has boosted the local economy.

Besides the economy, Joko said the ProKlim programme also provides health benefits for the community. Previously many residents often fell ill, but with the ProKlim programme the health status of the Sangurejo community, and the Turi District community in particular, has improved.

Joko added that the most significant change in the past two years has been in cooperation. Sangurejo has received support from external institutions to conduct mentoring in the Turi District area. The mentoring covers waste management, the use of local materials as natural dyes for batik products, and the use of household spaces to provide food security.

“Every year it always provides mentoring through the Green Village competition strategy. This can encourage our residents to pay more attention to the natural environment,” he said.

Programmes implemented include ecoprint, biopori, waste banks, and infiltration wells.
