Sangkuriang Train Serves 40,982 Passengers on 1,002-Kilometre Southern Java Route
Long-distance train travel is increasingly popular among the public, especially ahead of long weekends which typically see heightened tourism and family travel mobility. Since commencing operations in early May 2026 until 24 May, the Sangkuriang train service between Bandung and Ketapang has served 40,982 passengers.
The Sangkuriang service is Indonesia’s second-longest intercity train route after the Blambangan Express, covering approximately 1,002 kilometres between Bandung and Ketapang in Banyuwangi.
Anne Purba, KAI’s Vice President of Corporate Communication, stated that the Sangkuriang service offers a more comfortable long-distance travel experience with diverse service classes and the distinctive scenery of Southern Java’s route.
“Travel by train provides a unique experience. Passengers can leisurely enjoy the changing landscapes of mountains, rice fields, and eastern Java’s coastal areas from the comfort of their train windows,” she said.
The Sangkuriang service began operating from Bandung to Ketapang on 1 May 2026 and Ketapang to Bandung on 2 May. Along its route, it passes through major cities including Yogyakarta, Solo, Madiun, Surabaya, Probolinggo, Jember, and Banyuwangi.
The lengthy journey offers a unique experience for passengers, as Southern Java’s route is known for its diverse natural scenery—from the Priangan highlands, Central Java’s rice fields, to the eastern Java regions characterised by plantations and coastal views.
The Sangkuriang service offers three classes: Compartment Suites, Executive, and Premium Economy.
In Compartment Suites, passengers receive private reclining seats up to 180 degrees, Luxury Lounge service, TV, foldable tables, blankets, pillows, air conditioning, power sockets, USB ports, and 20kg of free baggage.
The Executive class features reclining seats with more spacious seating, Audio Video on Demand TVs, foldable tables, air conditioning, power sockets, two toilets, and 20kg of free baggage.
Premium Economy offers 80 seats with reclining chairs, Audio Video on Demand entertainment, air conditioning, power sockets, two toilets, and 20kg of free baggage.
The Sangkuriang service also includes a dining car providing seating for passengers during the journey.
“Long weekends are an ideal time to enjoy long-distance train travel. Passengers can experience a more relaxed journey without the congestion of road traffic,” Anne added.
Sangkuriang tickets are available via the Access by KAI app and other official booking platforms. KAI also advises passengers to plan their journeys early due to increased demand during long weekends.
