Sangkuriang Train Officially Operates, Connecting Banyuwangi–Bandung Without Transit
BANYUWANGI, KOMPAS.com - The Sangkuriang train on the Banyuwangi-Bandung route officially commenced its maiden voyage on Saturday (2/5/2026), marked by a traditional coconut-breaking ceremony performed by the Regent of Banyuwangi, Ipuk Fiestiandani Azwar Anas, accompanied by the Vice President of the Jember Regional Operations Division 9, Hengky Prasetyo.
This event signifies a new chapter in transportation services, directly connecting the eastern tip of Java Island to the heart of West Java.
The traditional coconut-breaking ceremony was conducted as a symbol of safety, followed by the Regent of Banyuwangi presenting the Semboyan 40 to the train driver as the official signal for departure.
“We are introducing the Sangkuriang train with high service standards to provide a memorable travel experience for customers,” said Hengky.
He stated that the train is not merely a mode of transport but also a symbol of strong collaboration between KAI and local government in advancing public mobility and the tourism sector.
Advantages of Facilities and the Latest Train Set The Sangkuriang train arrives with a modern train set transformation to ensure maximum comfort for various customer segments.
The train set consists of one Compartment Coach offering privacy and exclusivity with a capacity of 16 seats.
“It is also equipped with supporting facilities including a restaurant coach for dining services during the journey and one power generation coach,” he explained.
Public enthusiasm on the first day of the Sangkuriang train’s operation showed positive figures, both from the initial departure point and the accumulation in the Jember Regional Operations Division 9 area.
“Overall, in the Jember Regional Operations Division 9 area, the total passengers for this maiden departure reached 495 people or 109 percent of the total capacity,” he clarified.
The occupancy details include the Compartment class with 12 passengers or 75 percent, Executive SS with 189 passengers or 95 percent, and Economy SS reaching 294 passengers or 123 percent, including partial or dynamic passengers (relay).
