Sandy upset in ITF quarterfinals
Sandy upset in ITF quarterfinals
Musthofid, The Jakarta Post, Jakarta
Second seeded Sandy Gumulya stumbled to an upset 6-7(5), 7-6(4),
6-4 loss to fellow Indonesian Dian Mayasari in the girls' singles
quarterfinal round match at the ITF Junior Championship here on
Friday.
Sandy failed to continue her winning form, which had earned
her the Cigna Open victory a couple of weeks ago, as she seemed
to be suffering a pain from an injured left wrist that she
sustained in training.
During the match, Sandy, who is ranked 93rd in world's
juniors, braved the pain by making regular two-handed shots at
the Kemayoran Tennis Court in Central Jakarta.
However, after taking the opening set, she lost her grip
against number 703 opponent and fell apart in the remaining two
sets.
Sandy, who had been recommended by her medical advisor to take
a month's rest instead of taking a risk in the tournament, was so
devastated after the match that she could not hold her tears
back.
Neither would mother Siantiningsih comment about her
daughter's performance.
Dian will now face Maya Rosa in an all-Indonesian semifinal
match on Saturday. Maya stopped another Indonesian player, Denise
Haryanto, 6-2, 6-2.
The other semifinal tie will pit top seed Chan Yung-jan of
Chinese Taipei against fourth seed Thassha Vitayaviroj.
Chan crushed Czarina Mae Arevalo of the Philippines 6-0, 6-0
while Vitayaviroj thumped Indonesian Septi Mende 6-1, 6-1.
Sunu Wahyu Triaji, the only home hopeful in the boys' singles
contention, marched to the semifinals after beating Amadeus
Fulford-Jones of Britain 6-4, 6-4.
The 15-year-old, who is the second seed in the tournament,
will be challenged in Saturday's semifinals by South Korean Kim
Woo-ram, a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Thai Weerapat Doakmaiklee.
"I have met him twice. The score is one-one. I won in the
Wismilak semifinal match in Surabaya last November. But the
following week he made it even after he beat me in the Thailand
Open, also in the semifinals," Sunu said.
Third seed Kiril Tcherveniachki of New Zealand conceded two
games in his 6-2, 6-0 win over qualifier Kim Kyung-soo to book a
match against top seed Luke Campbell of Britain.
Campbell brushed aside Natapong Ponkunsub of Thailand 6-3, 6-
3.
The doubles category has also entered the semifinal stage with
Indonesians dominating the boys' matches while Maya Rosa and
Septi Mende were the only home pair in the girls' matches.
