Second-seed Sandy Gumulya of Indonesia will be challenged by surprise package Chan Yung-Jan of Taiwan in the final of the US$10,000 Indonesia Women's Circuit tennis tournament here on Sunday.
Sandy secured her final place after stopping unseeded Ayu Fani Damayanti 6-1, 6-3 in the semifinal match on Saturday while Chan went through with a surprise 6-0, 7-5 win over top seed Napaporn Tongsalee of Thailand.
16-year-old Ayu admitted to losing concentration due to a lingering foot injury from earlier in the tournament, though she praised her opponent's good play.
"I could not concentrate to the match. But I have to admit Sandy played very well today," she said.
Ayu hurt her foot during a quarterfinal match against Liza Andriyani on Friday.
Injury also plagued the other semifinal match with Tongsalee being treated for a sore toe. It appeared to affect her game and the Thai teenager was overpowered in the opening set.
Tongsalee came out aggressively in the second set but Chan proved resilient against the attack to wrap up the match.
In the women's doubles, second seeds Liza of Indonesia and Thassah Vitayaviroj of Thailand won the semifinal match against third seeds Wukirasih Sawondari of Indonesia and Minori Takemoto of Japan 6-1, 7-6 (3).
In the final, Liza and Thassah will meet unseeded Chan and her Thai partner, Pichittra Thongdach, who booked their place on Friday, beating Ayu and Septi Mende.
