PT Samudera Indonesia Tbk (SMDR) is set to build two new chemical tankers, allocating Rp 460 billion in capital for the expansion. The move aims to sustain medium-term growth amid rising demand for chemical product distribution in domestic and regional markets. According to a company disclosure on Tuesday (14/7/2026), the investment funds were channelled to its subsidiary, PT Samudera Perkapalan Indonesia, through a Mudharabah financing agreement signed on 10 July 2026. “The source of funding comes from the proceeds of the Shelf Public Offering of Sustainable Ijarah Sukuk I Samudera Indonesia Phase III Year 2026,” said Farida Helianti Sastrosatomo, Director of Compliance and Corporate Secretary of Samudera Indonesia, in a disclosure to the Indonesia Stock Exchange. The addition of the two chemical tankers is expected to enhance SMDR’s ability to capture growth opportunities in the specialised marine logistics sector, particularly for chemical product distribution requiring specific vessel specifications. For investors, this fleet expansion could potentially strengthen SMDR’s recurring revenue base by increasing transport capacity and extending service coverage to both domestic and regional markets. The financing to PT Samudera Perkapalan Indonesia is categorised as an affiliated transaction because the company is a subsidiary approximately 99% owned by SMDR. However, management confirmed that the transaction is neither a material transaction nor one involving a conflict of interest. The Rp 460 billion investment represents approximately 3.25% of SMDR’s total equity, which was recorded at US$785.27 million as of 31 March 2026, placing it well below the 20% equity threshold stipulated for material transactions under capital market regulations. Management believes this investment will provide added value to SMDR through increased operational capacity and business growth opportunities in specialised shipping. SMDR shares rose 0.71% to Rp 284 per share as of 14:04 WIB, with a 4.41% gain over the past five days.
