Samsung Transforms Phone Screen into Health Monitoring Device, Capable of Detecting Blood Pressure
Samsung has once again showcased a futuristic screen concept that goes beyond merely displaying smartphone visuals. Following the introduction of the Privacy Display feature on the Galaxy S26 Ultra, Samsung is now presenting a phone screen that simultaneously protects privacy and monitors users’ health. The new technology, named Sensor OLED Display, was demonstrated at the Society for Information Display (SID) 2026 Expo in the United States. Uniquely, this screen is claimed to detect heart rate and measure blood pressure simply through finger touch on the display. However, with the Sensor OLED Display, this function is now integrated directly into the smartphone screen. Samsung Display explains that this OLED panel uses organic photodiodes (OPD), special sensors embedded directly within the screen. Its operation is similar to the optical health sensors on smartwatches. The screen emits light onto the user’s skin, and the reflected light is read by the sensor to detect biometric information such as heart rate and blood pressure. This means users can simply place their finger on the screen for a quick health check without additional devices. Samsung also states that this screen could be used for next-generation fingerprint sensors, as organic photodiode technology was previously employed for fingerprint detection. The latest Sensor OLED Display panel measures 6.8 inches with a pixel density of up to 500 ppi. This figure represents an increase of about 33 percent compared to last year’s version, which used a 374 ppi panel. With this density level, the concept screen is now said to match the sharpness of OLED panels used in current modern flagship smartphones. “The Sensor OLED Display is structurally quite challenging to achieve high resolution because RGB pixels and OPD pixels must be arranged in a single layer,” said this Samsung Display Division, as gathered by KompasTekno from SamMobile. Samsung claims that achieving 500 ppi resolution was accomplished through advanced panel design and high-precision process control technology.
