Samsung Overhauls Galaxy Z Fold Naming Convention for New Foldable Models
Rumours of Samsung’s next foldable phone have resurfaced online. New leaks reveal Samsung’s plans for the naming of the two devices.
According to gadget leaker Ice Universe’s post on social media platform Weibo, Samsung intends to change its foldable phone naming scheme.
This change coincides with the arrival of a new foldable model previously rumoured to be the Galaxy Z Fold Wide.
Ice Universe claims that instead of using the “Wide” suffix, Samsung will name the device Galaxy Z Fold 8.
Meanwhile, the successor to the regular Galaxy Z Fold 7 will be called Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, meaning the Ultra variant will be positioned above the standard Galaxy Z Fold 8.
Based on previous rumours, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 successor — referred to in these leaks as the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra — is expected to feature several upgrades.
One of these is a larger 5,000 mAh battery, up from the 4,400 mAh in the Galaxy Z Fold 7. The foldable is also said to come with more capable triple rear cameras, though details remain unclear.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 (previously known as Galaxy Z Fold Wide) is designed to be a unique Samsung foldable.
Unlike previous Galaxy Z Fold series, it is reportedly set to feature a 4:3 aspect ratio, offering a more tablet-like experience when unfolded.
Samsung is reportedly designing this model to compete with Apple’s foldable smartphone, which has been widely leaked online.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 series is expected to launch at Galaxy Unpacked in July 2026. Alongside the book-style foldable, the event typically debuts the Galaxy Z Flip, which features a clamshell-style fold.
All three foldable smartphones are said to run on One UI 9 based on Android 17, enabling users to open multiple browser apps for multitasking.
However, it should be noted that this information is still speculative, as Samsung has not released any official details. We will have to wait and see.
