Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Specifications: Passport-Like Design
Samsung has officially undertaken a radical overhaul of its flagship foldable phone line through the launch of the Galaxy Z Fold8. Introduced at the Galaxy Unpacked event in London on 22 July 2026, this device brings a completely new design direction compared to its predecessor. Rather than a mere routine update, the Fold8 features a shorter and wider form factor, resembling the shape of a ‘passport’.
This move marks a strategic shift for Samsung. The Galaxy Z Fold8 is now positioned as a device that prioritably focuses on portability and content consumption convenience, while the demand for massive screens and the most cutting-edge camera systems is diverted to the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra variant. In Indonesia, the device has begun being marketed since 14 August 2026, bringing significant improvements in battery capacity and weight efficiency.
The most striking feature of the Galaxy Z Fold8 is its weight of only 201 grams. Samsung claims this is the lightest Galaxy Z Fold model they have ever produced. Although it is slightly thicker when folded (9.7 mm) compared to the Fold7 (8.9 mm), the drastic reduction in weight provides greater comfort when held for extended periods.
The 7.6-inch main display now features a 4:3 aspect ratio, which Samsung claims is more optimal for browsing, reading, and multitasking. Meanwhile, the 5.5-inch cover screen with a 10:16 ratio provides a more proportional user experience when the device is closed.
Samsung has introduced the Flex Titanium structure, featuring two layers of titanium beneath the display panel. This technology not only enhances durability but also significantly masks the crease that has long been a challenge for foldable phones.
The device’s engine is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 ‘for Galaxy’ chipset, paired with RAM options of up to 16GB.
One point of heated discussion is Samsung’s decision to ‘downgrade’ the camera specifications on the regular Fold8. While the Galaxy Z Fold7 was equipped with a 200MP main camera and a 3x telephoto lens, the Fold8 instead uses a dual 50MP camera system without a dedicated telephoto lens.
This strategy indicates that Samsung is prioritising a balance between battery capacity, which has now increased to 4,800mAh, and body portability. For users seeking heavy-duty photography capabilities, Samsung directs them towards the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, which retains the 200MP sensor and optical zoom capabilities.
The Galaxy Z Fold8 runs on Android 17 with the One UI 9 interface. Samsung has embedded the ‘Now Nudge’ feature, which provides context-based action recommendations. Additionally, Galaxy AI features are now more optimised for large screens, including automatic content summarisation and the ‘My FanCam’ feature for more stable concert subject recording.
Interestingly, Samsung has also made it easier for users to migrate from other ecosystems. The Smart Switch feature in One UI 9 now supports more comprehensive data transfers from iPhone, including passwords, passkeys, and even eSIMs.
Samsung Indonesia offers the Galaxy Z Fold8 in several colour options such as Lavender, Graphite, Cream, and an exclusive Pistachio colour.
Overall, the Galaxy Z Fold8 is Samsung’s statement that foldable phones do not always have to be heavy and thick devices. With a focus on daily usability and battery life, the Fold8 becomes an attractive choice for those who want a mini tablet in their pocket without excessive weight.
