Samsung Galaxy S27 Ultra testing 50MP 4x telephoto camera

Samsung is reportedly preparing changes for the Galaxy S27 Ultra camera, which is expected to launch in 2027, including testing a telephoto camera with 4x optical zoom capabilities.

According to a report from Gizmochina on Monday (31/8) local time, Samsung is testing a 50-megapixel (MP) telephoto camera with a 1/1.9-inch sensor for the Galaxy S27 Ultra.

If this lens implementation is realised, the Galaxy S27 Ultra camera will feature a larger sensor compared to the 5x periscope telephoto camera on the Galaxy S26 Ultra, which utilises a 1/2.52-inch sensor.

This change aligns with previous rumours suggesting that Samsung may remove the 3x telephoto camera on the Galaxy S27 Ultra. Consequently, the 4x telephoto camera could become the sole dedicated telephoto camera on the device, with zoom capabilities in the 1x to 5x range relying more heavily on the main camera and image processing.

However, Samsung has not yet confirmed whether it will use this specific camera configuration for the Galaxy S27 Ultra. The company is reportedly still considering production costs, research and development requirements, and the practical benefits of the new camera for daily usage.

Samsung is also rumoured to be evaluating five different Galaxy S27 Ultra prototypes. This indicates that the company is still testing various options before deciding on the final camera configuration.
