Jakarta (ANTARA) — The Samsung Galaxy S27 Pro and Galaxy S27 Ultra are reportedly set to become Samsung’s first phones to use DC dimming technology to control screen brightness.

According to a GSM Arena report on Saturday (10 November), DC dimming allows a screen to adjust brightness by regulating electrical voltage, which can reduce flicker that may cause eye strain.

Samsung has so far relied on Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) to control screen brightness, including on the Galaxy S26 Ultra. For some people who are sensitive to flicker, PWM can cause eye strain and even headaches after prolonged screen use.

DC dimming, by contrast, adjusts brightness by changing the voltage supplied to the light source. This approach can reduce screen flicker.

Some manufacturers therefore use a hybrid approach combining DC dimming and PWM. Under this arrangement, DC dimming can be used at medium to high brightness levels, while PWM remains in use when the screen is set to a low brightness level.

The technology is not new to the smartphone industry. Some of Xiaomi’s flagship phones, for example, have adopted DC dimming as a display feature alongside LTPO technology, which supports adaptive refresh rates.
