TEMPO Interactive, Samarinda: The Samarinda Municipal Government, East Kalimantan, will not issue permits for coal mining this year.

The regional secretary of the Samarinda Municipal Government, Fadly Illa, said that government will re-evaluate the 44 already issued permits.

“There will be no issuance of new permits in 2009. But it will be possible to extend the approved permits,” he said, Wednesday (21/1).

The government will also re-evaluate permits of buildings inside the city of Samarinda city.

Every house will be obligated to provide a proper water channel so that it will not create a new flood area.

“So every housing area should have a drainage channel and build a water-retention pool,” he said.

Fadly acknowledged that the flooding in Samarinda was caused by environmental damage.

The Karangmumus and Mahakam rivers had been silted up so they could not hold water when the heavy rains come.

Coal mining is also suspected of causing the flooding although it is not the main cause.

“Research should be carried out in order to find out,” said Fadly.
