Samarinda builds new airport

SAMARINDA, East Kalimantan: The government will soon start the
construction of a new airport because the existing Temindung
airport is considered outdated and unsafe.

"The money is there and we will start by building the runway,"
chief of the provincial transportation office Zainal told Antara
yesterday.

The local government has acquired 300 hectares of land in the
Lempake subdistrict, about five kilometers north of Samarinda.
The new runway will be 900 meters in length and the whole project
is to be completed in three years.

He said the new airport, also to be named Temindung, will be
suitable for small and medium sized aircraft. (pan)
