Defence, in other words, is no longer just about how to face an enemy, but also about how to ensure that human life can be sustained.

Sleman, DIY (ANTARA) - There is something different about the commemoration of the TNI anniversary on 5 October this year. Monas did not serve as the stage for long parades of combat vehicles, the roar of aircraft, and rows of military hardware as has been familiar in TNI Day celebrations.

The peak of the 81st TNI anniversary commemoration was moved to Prima Field, the TNI Headquarters Complex, Cilangkap, East Jakarta, and took place in a simpler and more solemn ceremony.

For a public accustomed to rituals of grandeur, the absence of a grand parade might feel like a reduction. However, there are times when a celebration finds its true meaning when something is left unshown.

Hundreds of vehicles and military hardware that were originally intended to fill Monas did not march. The sailing pass in Jakarta Bay was also cancelled. Some soldiers and fleets were instead focused on disaster management tasks and humanitarian missions in various regions.

“Many soldiers are currently carrying out disaster management assignments,” said the Head of the TNI Headquarters Press Centre, Major General TNI Muhammad Nas, as quoted by ANT_ARA.

A few weeks prior, the public had indeed seen a more glamorous side of the TNI through the TNI Fair at Monas. Now, as the anniversary arrived, the stage has become much smaller.

There is an interesting point worth reflecting upon from this change. Military strength does not always manifest through the roar of combat engines or the shine of steel tanks. Sometimes, it shines more brightly when a soldier steps down from the stage, dons their gear, and rushes towards someone in need of help.

Regardless of the form of celebration, there is always something stirring about the TNI anniversary commemoration. This moment reminds us that a nation is not merely a collection of citizens who happen to live within the same borders, but a shared home that must be protected.

This is where this year’s TNI Day theme, “Strong TNI with the People, Sovereign, Just, and Prosperous Indonesia,” feels so meaningful. The phrase contains an important sequence: starting from being strong, leading to sovereignty, and finally realising a just and prosperous Indonesia.

That sequence serves as a reminder that the strength of the TNI is not the ultimate goal, but a tool to achieve something more fundamental: a shared life that is safe, decent, and dignified.
