Singer-actress Dewi Yull's honest statement that families of
artists are vulnerable to ups and downs was recently published in
the daily Merdeka. Artists' families are undermined with gossip
and divorces. This fact should be admitted in all honesty.

Every aspiring artist should prepare themselves for the worst,
which includes family problems.

I salute Dewi Yull for her honest account of an artist's life.
If artists become "public figures", which means they have become
public property, they have to realize that they will always be
the focus of their fans' attention. Fans like to know about their
daily lives, what they do in private, even about their marital
status.

Fans will be saddened if their favorite stars suddenly
disappear from sight, or if they become the subject of ugly
whispers, or when they secretly marry. Not to mention news of
divorce, or that a separation has broken up the family, etc. etc.

Fans think of their favorite artists as something that they
own, and they adore and admire them. But the reverse can also
happen. Admiration could turn to hatred, artists may become the
victims of abusive words, if they have displeased their fans. It
is a risk artists have to face.

Being an admirer of Dewi Yull, I hope that my favorite star
will always keep on the right road, avoid nasty gossip and take
care of herself and her career.
