Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Salemba Class IIA Prison in Jakarta has introduced a productive and sustainable independence-building programme for inmates through an innovative layer hen farming initiative.

The programme, which manages 300 layer hens with a productivity rate of 50 per cent, was inspected by the Head of the DKI Jakarta Regional Office of the Directorate General of Corrections, Wachid Wibowo, during a harvest event on Thursday (25/6).

“This layer hen farm is a tangible example of productive rehabilitation. It not only supports the food security programme but also equips inmates with useful skills as preparation for their return to society,” Wachid said.

He expressed hope that such a measurable rehabilitation programme could motivate all other correctional units to create impactful breakthroughs.

Meanwhile, Head of Salemba Class IIA Prison Amico Balalembang affirmed his commitment to continuously optimising the farm as a sustainable upstream-to-downstream learning facility for inmates.

Beyond fostering a more productive prison environment, the programme is a concrete implementation of the Acceleration Programme of the Minister of Immigration and Corrections and a follow-up to the directive of the Director General of Corrections.

“The layer hen farming programme will continue to be optimised as a means of learning and empowerment for inmates, while also supporting the food security programme which is a priority of the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections,” Amico said.

Through this productive rehabilitation orientation, he added, Salemba Class IIA Prison seeks to develop independent inmates who are ready to positively reintegrate into society after completing their sentences.
