Salary of Rp 2.8 Million and Work Tools Destroyed, Joyo Now Left with Nothing

Joyo Sugiman (70) suffered a tragic fate after a fire destroyed a boarding house and welding workshop on Jalan Tukad Pancoran, South Denpasar, this morning. Not only did he lose his place of residence, but his newly received salary of Rp 2.8 million and all his work tools were also consumed by the flames.

Joyo is a construction worker who lived in the boarding house. When the fire broke out, his salary was still inside his bag and he had not had time to move it. Along with his clothes and other belongings, the money was also burned.

“I had just been paid yesterday and the money was in my bag, I didn’t have time to grab it. There was Rp 2.8 million, along with all my clothes. Even these clothes I’m wearing now, I had to ask for,” Joyo explained when met at the scene on Friday (28/8/2026).

The man from Blitar is currently unable to work due to the disaster. In addition to losing his money and clothes, the carpentry tools he normally used for work were also damaged by the fire.

Joyo has just received assistance from the relevant authorities so that he can continue his daily activities properly. Nevertheless, he intends to keep working at his project site.

The man who has lived in Bali for 17 years has chosen to stay temporarily at his project site’s workers’ quarters on Jalan Pulau Moyo, Denpasar, rather than return to his hometown.

“I don’t know where I’ll stay, I’ll probably sleep at the workers’ quarters at the project site. But all my carpentry tools are gone, the grinder and everything else are all damaged,” he said.

As previously reported, the fire is suspected to have been caused by an electrical short circuit in one of the empty boarding rooms. The fire spread quickly because the building was reportedly a semi-permanent boarding house.

The fire caused one fatality. An elderly woman with the initials S (70) is believed to have died after being struck by debris from the collapsed two-storey boarding house.

In addition, there were victims who suffered burns and have now received medical treatment.
