Salaf Pesantren and Al-Azhar: Between Guardians of Tradition and Traps

It must be acknowledged that Salaf pesantren are the most loyal guardians of tradition. There, knowledge is not merely cognition, but a spiritual transmission through a chain that connects directly to the Prophet. Another unmatched advantage is in preserving ethics (adab). Students do not just read books; they delve into their meanings and practise them with humility. In a world that has lost its moral compass, the pesantren serves as that compass itself—keeping classical texts alive in the pulse of the students. However, behind these strengths, let us be honest with ourselves. The choice in following a madhhab sometimes traps us in a gilded cage. For the majority, their curriculum is rigidly based on the Shafi’i madhhab, to the point that other madhhabs are often viewed with an inferior gaze, as if truth belongs to only one door. If there is a difference at a glance, it is not uncommon to easily judge with verdicts of “wrong” or “imperfect.” Feudalism often exceeds ethical boundaries. Reverence for the Kiai is obligatory, but when it freezes into dogma that closes the door to discussion, it kills critical reasoning. Students become mere copy-pastes of their teacher’s thoughts without space to ask “why?” Our education becomes monologic. The Kiai speaks, the students only nod. Yet, today’s world demands Wasatiyah (moderation) that arises from healthy debate, not from blind obedience.
