Sailor shoots policeman, two others

JAKARTA: A drunken Navy officer shot and injured two people, including a police officer, early on Monday morning at a cafe on Jl. Enggano, Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta.

Hanafi, a security guard at Evita Cafe, told police that the Navy officer, chief cadet Ragil Puryono, was drunk when he fired haphazardly in several directions.

Stray bullets hit the toe of policeman Brig. Matris and the stomach of a street vendor close to the scene, Muntoyo Arif.

"We're still investigating the incident, but reports received by police said that the incident was triggered by a quarrel. The motive, however, remains unclear," said city police spokesman Sr. Comr. Prasetyo.

The victims were taken to Soekanto Police Hospital, Kramat Jati, East Jakarta, while Ragil was taken to 502 subgarrison, North Jakarta Military Command, for interrogation.

Police seized an FN pistol in the incident. -- JP
