Sailor dies in drunken brawl

JAKARTA (JP): A sailor of a Japanese vessel was allegedly beaten to death with broken beer bottles by his drunken friends in Kalibaru, North Jakarta, yesterday.

The victim was identified as Samuel Mantiri, 33, of Lajangiru, Ujungpandang, South Sulawesi. He was found dead in front of a food stall with severe wounds to his neck, said Herman Mantiri, the victim's uncle.

According to him, a quarrel between Samuel and his friends broke out into a fight.

Samuel was boarding at Herman's house in Kalibaru while on vacation. The night before the incident, Samuel was picked up by his fellow sailors for drink.

"He left my house at around 6 p.m., saying there was some small business to sort out with his friends," Herman said.

Samuel's body was taken to the Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital in Central Jakarta for a postmortem. (04)
