Saiful Mujani Reported Over Alleged Incitement
Political analyst Saiful Mujani was reported to the Metro Jaya Regional Police on Wednesday (8/4) regarding allegations of incitement. The report is believed to stem from Mujani’s statements narrated as encouraging the overthrow of President Prabowo Subianto.
“(Reported) related to Article 246 of Law No. 1/2023,” said the Head of Public Relations of the Metro Jaya Regional Police, Commissioner Budi Hermanto, to reporters on Thursday (9/4).
It is known that Article 246 of the Criminal Code regulates incitement against public authority with a maximum penalty of four years’ imprisonment.
Budi stated that his side is still examining the report. Later, the reporter will be clarified to obtain statements regarding the report, including the reasons for filing it.
“It will be examined when the reporter’s statement is taken,” he said.
Previously, Saiful Mujani was reported for alleged incitement to the Metro Jaya Regional Police on Wednesday (8/4). The report was submitted by Robina Akbar from the East Jakarta Community Alliance and registered with number LP/B/2428/IV/2026/SPKT/POLDA METRO JAYA, dated 8 April 2026.
Regarding the report, Mujani described it as a legitimate step. However, according to him, the statements he made should be responded to with a reply.
“A legitimate step. But since this is in the realm of civil society and in the form of attitudes and opinions, it should just be responded to,” Saiful said when confirmed on Thursday.
Mujani stated that involving law enforcement apparatus, in this case the police, to handle opinions expressed by citizens could impact democracy.
“It’s not good for democracy if the state [police] gets involved in managing citizens’ opinions and political attitudes, unless I have physically harmed someone or deprived someone of their freedom and rights,” he said.
“Just refute it, counter criticism with criticism, but it’s fine if you want to show more clearly that this country is becoming increasingly fascist,” he added.
