The Indonesian Journalists’ Association (PWI) East Java held the peak commemoration of National Press Day (HPN) 2026. The event took place at the Dyandra Convention Hall in Surabaya on Thursday (15/4).

Chairman of the House of Representatives’ Budget Agency and East Java PDIP Regional Chairman, Said Abdullah, received a special award from PWI East Java on this occasion. He was recognised as a key figure in safeguarding national fiscal policies to remain people-oriented.

PWI East Java Chairman, Lutfi El Hakim, stated that Said Abdullah is a central figure in the current economic stability. This assessment is based on his track record in leading budget discussions at the national level.

“Mr Said, a Madura figure and Chairman of the DPR Budget Agency, whom we regard as playing an important role in maintaining pro-people fiscal policies. Together with the Finance Minister, he has managed to keep fiscal health intact amid economic pressures from rising oil prices, thus preventing a fuel price hike,” he said in a written statement on Friday (17/4).

PWI East Java views this achievement as a tangible contribution to the broader welfare of society. Lutfi hopes Said will continue to consistently oversee the national budget prioritising public interests in the future.

In response to the appreciation, Said Abdullah humbly accepted the award. The Madura-born politician admitted he does not yet feel worthy of the recognition.

“I hope the press remains the fourth pillar of democracy. The press as a tool for controlling power, both for us in the DPR and for the running of the government, including at the regional level, so that it always serves as a reminder, ensuring that the exercise of power truly benefits the people,” he added.

Said also extended congratulations to all media workers commemorating their big day. He described journalism as a noble profession with a significant impact on civilisation.

“Through the work of the press, the public gains a window to see the world; continue to be objective and stand for the truth,” he concluded.

For information, besides Said Abdullah, PWI East Java also awarded several other figures. One of them is the Mayor of Surabaya, Eri Cahyadi, who is also a PDIP cadre.

Eri was recognised for successfully bringing positive changes through various public service innovations in Surabaya. His leadership is considered highly responsive and progressive in addressing residents’ complaints and in developing the city’s infrastructure.
