Sahur wake-up raids and children's colouring contest mark Tangerang City's Ramadhan Karim
Ramadhan Karim this year blends religious values with popular entertainment. A series of competitions forms the main draw, including a creative dance contest, a children’s colouring competition, and a sahur wake-up raid that carries a strong tradition of rousing people for sahur.
Tangerang — Head of the City’s Department of Youth and Sports (Dispora), Kaonang, said Ramadan Karim at the Al-Ittihad Grand Mosque is not merely a ceremonial event but an integration of religious values, competition, and the preservation of local traditions during Ramadan.
“Ramadhan Karim this year offers a blend of religious values and popular entertainment. The lineup of competitions that attract the most interest includes the creative dance contest, the children’s colouring contest, and the sahur wake-up raid, which is steeped in the tradition of waking people for sahur,” Kaonang said in a statement from Tangerang on Wednesday.
Dispora Kota Tangerang collaborates with Fatayat NU to stage Ramadan Karim at the Al-Ittihad Grand Mosque until 8 March 2026. The event is presented as a space for Islamic outreach, while also preserving local cultural traditions during the holy month.
He also explained that the activities provide a platform for Youth Community Organizations (OKP) in line with the characteristics of each organization.
The event also involves broad participation from students of various pesantren, primary school pupils (MI), and junior high school students (MTs).
“Through Ramadan Karim, differences in backgrounds are hoped to become a means to strengthen unity and solidarity in Tangerang City,” he said.
Chairman of the Mosque Prosperity Council (DKM) of Al-Ittihad Mosque, Herman Suwarman, emphasised that Ramadan Karim is an important platform to fill the holy month with productive activities, while strengthening ties of friendship among residents.
He explained that the main aim of the event is not merely ceremonial, but a practical effort to preserve the distinctive Ramadan atmosphere in Tangerang City.
He hoped Ramadan Karim could act as a bulwark in safeguarding the local cultural traditions rooted in the community.
“This implementation further enriches and preserves the cultural heritage of Tangerang City. With the diversity and differences that exist, the activity becomes a means to enhance unity among us all,” he said.
