Sahroni Supports Police Reform Team's Recommendation: Impossible for Polri to Be Under a Ministry

Deputy Chairman of Commission III of the DPR, Ahmad Sahroni, considers the recommendations of the Police Reform Acceleration Commission submitted to President Prabowo Subianto to be spot on. Sahroni stated that it is impossible for Polri to be placed under a ministry. “It is already very appropriate that Polri is under the President and the appointment system also goes through the DPR. Two years ago, I already said that Polri cannot be under a ministry; that is very impossible,” Sahroni told reporters on Wednesday (6/5/2026). Sahroni views the role of the National Police Commission (Kompolnas) as crucial in terms of oversight. The NasDem Party politician said this presents a particular challenge, given that Kompolnas will become an independent institution. “Kompolnas, in its role as an overseer, must truly be professional and not just an institution,” said Sahroni. “This is a heavy challenge for Kompolnas as the overseer of Polri. Hopefully, Polri in the future will be even better and continue to professionally carry out its duties as the protector of society,” he added. Sahroni mentioned that there is an opportunity for the government to propose revisions to the Law on Polri. Sahroni hopes that the discussion of the Polri Bill will be followed up after the DPR returns to its session period. “If it’s like this, it becomes a government initiative because there is a reform team; we’re on recess now, hopefully the discussion of the bill will proceed soon after entering the session period,” he explained. One of the recommendations approved by Prabowo is the position of Polri. Prabowo chose for Polri to remain positioned under the president, with no establishment of a special ministry. In addition, the Chief of Police will still be appointed by the President. The name of the prospective Chief of Police will be submitted by the President to the DPR for approval. “Regarding the position of Polri, it remains as it is now. Polri is directly under the president and no security ministry or police ministry is formed, or placing the police under the current existing ministry. Polri remains directly under the president,” said Coordinating Minister for Law and Human Rights Yusril Ihza Mahendra at the Presidential Palace complex in Jakarta on Wednesday (5/5).
