Sahroni States Police Bill to Become Government Initiative, DPR to Follow Up
Jakarta - Deputy Chairman of DPR Commission III Ahmad Sahroni stated that the revision of the Law on the Indonesian National Police (Polri) has the potential to become a government initiative. This is because there are already several recommendations from the Police Reform Acceleration Commission that have been submitted to President Prabowo Subianto. “If it’s like this, it becomes a government initiative because there is a reform team,” Sahroni said when contacted on Wednesday (6/5/2026). Sahroni hopes that the discussion process can be directly prepared after the DPR recess period ends in mid-May 2026. “And since we are in recess, hopefully the bill discussion will proceed soon after the session period resumes,” he added. Chairman of the Police Reform Acceleration Commission Jimly Asshiddiqie said that the law revision is necessary to strengthen Polri’s institutional reforms. “So we propose the formation of a revision to the Law on Polri, which will then be followed up with a government regulation or presidential regulation,” Jimly stated during a press conference. Those recommendations include changes to eight Polri Regulations (Perpol) and 24 Chief of Police Regulations (Perkap), targeted for completion by 2029. On that occasion, the Police Reform Acceleration Commission also stated that President Prabowo Subianto approved the need to limit police positions outside the Polri institution. “It was decided by the President that specific positions must be determined limitatively, like in the TNI Law. So not like now, with no boundaries,” Jimly said. This arrangement will later be included in the Polri Law revision and strengthened through government regulations. “Especially regarding the National Police Commission (Kompolnas), as well as the placement of police in non-policing duties. That will be emphasised in the law,” said Yusril.
