Sahroni Says Judges Face Responsibilities in This World and the Next: It's Unfair if Their Salaries Are Not Yet Adequate
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Deputy Chairman of Commission III of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Ahmad Sahroni, believes it is unfair if judges in Indonesia still receive salaries and benefits that are not yet adequate, considering the significant responsibilities they bear in deciding cases.
The Nasdem politician even likened the duties of judges as something that must be accounted for not only in this world but also in the afterlife.
“If we look at it now, it is clear that judges in Indonesia have not received adequate salaries and benefits. And I think this is unfair; how can we give them such great responsibilities in this world and the afterlife to decide a case, when the appreciation for their work is not commensurate?” said Sahroni when contacted on Saturday (16/5/2026).
“From a performance perspective, it is also clear that inadequate judges’ salaries have the potential to make judges accept bribes, which clearly damages the legal order in Indonesia,” said Sahroni.
Therefore, Sahroni supports increasing the salaries and welfare of judges to maintain the integrity of the judiciary.
“So, increasing the salaries and welfare of judges can certainly help maintain the quality of law enforcement in Indonesia,” he concluded.
“Currently, throughout ASEAN, we are recognised as having judges whose salaries have increased, surpassing Malaysia,” said Prabowo during the inauguration of the Ibu Marsinah Museum and Transit House in Nganjuk Regency, East Java, on Saturday.
Prabowo said that the government has increased judges’ salaries since last year, especially for junior judges.
“That is why I had the honour to increase judges’ salaries last year. The salary of the most junior judge was increased by almost 300 percent, 280 percent,” he said.
“The salary of our most junior judges is now twice that of Malaysian judges,” said Prabowo.
