JAKARTA — Ahmad Sahroni, Deputy Chairman of Commission III of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), has revealed the reasons why Listyo Sigit Prabowo remains in his position as National Police Chief under President Prabowo Subianto.

According to Sahroni, there are specific needs that necessitate Listyo Sigit’s retention, amidst discussions regarding limiting the National Police Chief’s term to a maximum of two to three years.

“However, in the current situation, for instance, with Mr Listyo Sigit, there are special needs stemming from the presidential election process up to the current period,” Sahroni stated when met at the DPR RI Building on Monday (17/05/2026).

Sahroni noted that the Indonesian National Police (Polri), under Listyo Sigit’s leadership, is deemed capable of maintaining comfort and security, particularly throughout the presidential election process and the current administration’s operations. Consequently, Sahroni added, there are special considerations that have led to Listyo Sigit continuing to be trusted to lead the Bhayangkara Corps.

“That is due to the special contributions made by Mr Sigit. That is why he remains in office today, though in the future, it will be changed to a maximum of three years,” said Sahroni.

Nevertheless, Sahroni expressed support for the proposal to limit the National Police Chief’s term to a maximum of three years to ensure regeneration within the police force. “I support it; as I mentioned, strategic positions like the National Police Chief should be for a maximum of three years to allow for regeneration below them. This is the best approach,” he said.

KPRP Secretary Ahmad Dofiri stated that the commission is only proposing regulations regarding the career path of National Police Chief candidates to ensure a better regeneration process.

“It is about the career path. There is no fixed limitation on the position of National Police Chief. The discussion in the commission is focused on regulating the career path,” Dofiri said during a press conference in Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, on Wednesday (06/05/2026).

Dofiri noted that the authority to determine the term of the National Police Chief rests entirely with the President. Therefore, KPRP is focusing on improving the career development system for high-ranking police officers.

He explained that ideal candidates for National Police Chief should be high-ranking officers with diverse experience and a mature track record, progressing from one-star to three-star ranks. This pattern should include experience in operational, developmental, and regional roles, such as Deputy Regional Police Chiefs, Regional Police Chiefs, and assignments at National Police Headquarters.

Dofiri believes this career pattern ensures a high-ranking officer possesses sufficient experience before ascending to the position of National Police Chief. “Ideally, the term for the National Police Chief should be around two to three years. This is to ensure that regeneration remains effective,” he concluded.
