Muhammad Rosidi, an environmental activist from South Bangka, Bangka Belitung Province, became the victim of an acid attack by unknown assailants (OTK). As a result of the incident, he suffered burns to his legs, hands, and groin. Rosidi stated that he was doused with acid on 17 February 2026 in the Toboali area of South Bangka. He suspects the terror is related to his critical stance on illegal mining and smuggling. In response, Deputy Chairman of Commission III of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Ahmad Sahroni, expressed fury and called on the Bangka Belitung Police Chief to take direct action. If left unchecked, he believes such terror could affect anyone. “This is clearly structured terror, not just for activists, but for all of us. This is truly very concerning. Therefore, I ask the Bangka Belitung Police Chief to be firm and immediately handle this case. And don’t delay, quickly investigate the facts of the incident. Whoever the perpetrators are must be immediately revealed to the public as clearly as possible,” Sahroni said in a written statement in Jakarta on Thursday, 2 April 2026. Sahroni assessed that the proliferation of intimidation and attacks against those who voice criticism constitutes a dangerous situation if allowed to continue. “Cases of intimidation like this must not be allowed to persist. Yesterday Andrie Yunus from KontraS, and now another incident has come to light in Babel. Who will it be tomorrow? It could affect anyone out there. This pattern is clearly dangerous for the security of civil society. Therefore, the police must immediately uncover and prosecute the perpetrators, and ensure this is the last one,” said Sahroni.
