Sahroni: Asset Forfeiture Bill Aims to Eradicate Corruption, Not to Enable Abuse of Power

Ahmad Sahroni, Deputy Chair of the DPR’s Commission III, has again confirmed that the Asset Forfeiture Bill will definitely be gavelled through on 15 December 2026. He emphasised that the bill’s principal aim is to eradicate corruption.

Sahroni made the remarks during a meeting of Commission III of the House of Representatives with several experts on Monday (7/9/2026). He began by saying that the public needs further education about the Asset Forfeiture Bill.

“There is much that the public needs to be educated about. Those who dislike the government will find fault with anything. As in this room, we apply our own logic. Oh, this is what it means, this is how it is, and so on. But someone who does not think logically will say, ‘No, that’s wrong. Just kill it,’” Sahroni said during the meeting.

He affirmed that the Asset Forfeiture Bill will certainly be passed on 15 December, whatever the outcome. He also said he was not convinced that all citizens would be satisfied with the bill.

“Whatever the story with asset forfeiture, 15 December — please note it down, record it — if it is passed on 15 December, will that satisfy those who dislike the government? Not necessarily. But it will definitely be passed. Definitely. Yet perhaps if it is passed on the afternoon of the 15th or the next day, there will be another row. ‘Oh, they said this, they said that,’” he explained.

“But in line with the promise of the DPR leadership, it will definitely be passed on 15 December. We do not want, after this asset forfeiture bill is passed, people demanding other things on top of it,” he continued.

He stressed that Commission III of the DPR does not want the bill to end up being used as an instrument of abuse of power by the authorities. According to him, the bill’s core purpose is to eradicate corruptors.

“We do not want what we have worked for, what we have striven for, to be undermined. The point is that we share a commitment. Eradicating corruptors is a certainty, but let there be no arbitrary conduct. In the end, asset forfeiture must not become an abuse of power by the existing law enforcement apparatus. We do not want that,” he asserted.

“The government’s efforts, led by the President, have been carried out as well as possible despite the many shortcomings faced. Let us all agree that the single guiding principle of this asset forfeiture bill is that eradicating corruptors is the foremost priority for all of us. That is the essence. But there must be no arbitrary conduct or abuse of power by law enforcement officials,” he continued.
