Jakarta - Deputy Chairman of Commission III of the DPR, Ahmad Sahroni, has asserted that placing the Indonesian National Police (Polri) under a ministry is utterly impossible.

He stressed that Polri’s direct placement under the President of the Republic of Indonesia is a highly appropriate decision.

“It is already very appropriate that Polri is under the president, and the appointment system also goes through the DPR. Two years ago, I already said that Polri cannot be under a ministry; that is utterly impossible,” Sahroni stated when contacted on Wednesday (6/5/2026).

This is because there have already been several recommendations from the Police Reform Acceleration Commission submitted to President Prabowo Subianto.

“If it is like this, it becomes a government initiative because there is a reform team,” Sahroni said.

The NasDem Party politician emphasised that the DPR is in principle ready to follow up on discussions regarding the revision of the Polri Law.

Previously, several TNI retirees had proposed the establishment of a special ministry overseeing Polri, such as a Ministry of Security or a similar model, during an audience with the Police Reform Acceleration Commission at the Police Science College (PTIK), Jakarta, on Wednesday (19/11/2025).

“Well, the police, previously because of the separation from the TNI, indeed there was none, because in the constitution there is the Ministry of Defence. The police do not have one. So, the idea emerged: how about creating a Ministry of Security? That’s one idea,” said Chairman of the Police Reform Acceleration Commission, Jimly Asshiddiqie, during a press conference at the Police Science College, Jakarta, on Wednesday.

However, he assessed that the term ‘under’ a ministry often causes misperceptions, both in the TNI and Polri environments.

Jimly emphasised that in Indonesia’s state design, all state institutions, including the TNI and Polri, are in principle directly under the President as the holder of governmental authority.

“The TNI is not subordinate to the Minister of Defence. The TNI Chief of Staff is directly under the Supreme Commander, but coordinates with the Ministry of Defence on matters such as budget and recruitment, for example,” said the former Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court.

“Regarding the position of Polri, it remains as it is now; Polri is directly under the president,” said the Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Correctional Services, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, after a commission meeting with President Prabowo Subianto at the Presidential Palace Complex in Jakarta, on Tuesday afternoon (5/5/2026).

“No Ministry of Security or Ministry of Police will be established, nor will the police be placed under an existing ministry; Polri remains directly under the president,” Yusril stressed.
