Palembang — The National Peatland and Mangrove Management Agency (BPGMN) is completing the refinement of a proposed integrated information system called SAGARA, or the Nusantara Peatland and Mangrove Analysis System. The platform is designed as a single data gateway for all stakeholders involved in managing Indonesia’s peatland and mangrove ecosystems.

The meeting was chaired by BPGMN Deputy Head Major General Sriyanto and attended by representatives of Sriwijaya University (Unsri), the Ministry of Forestry, the Ministry of the Environment, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the South Sumatra provincial government, the Regional Leadership Coordination Forum (Forkompida), and civil society organisations.

Major General Sriyanto said SAGARA would be more than a digital map. Built on geospatial technology and enhanced with artificial intelligence (AI), the system is intended to serve as a centre for data and knowledge exchange as well as an early-warning system.

“SAGARA will be a clearing house and knowledge centre for peatland and mangrove ecosystem management. It will also serve as an early-detection system for fires on peatland and damage to mangrove ecosystems,” Major General Sriyanto said, quoted on Friday (30 October 2026).

He said SAGARA’s main advantage would be its ability to provide not only information on fire risk—based on both expert analysis and verified public reports—but also practical recommendations.

“The system will analyse the availability of human resources, including local communities and military and police personnel, as well as infrastructure in the field, so that prevention measures can be designed more precisely and efficiently,” he said.

SAGARA’s development involves integrating data across institutions, including the Ministry of Forestry, the Ministry of the Environment, BMKG, the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) and the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN). The portal is expected to be openly accessible, making it a tool for performance accountability as well as reliable decision-making.

“Our hope is that SAGARA will not merely store data, but genuinely connect information with action, so that peatland and mangrove protection and management across the country become more effective, measurable and beneficial to the public,” Major General Sriyanto said.
