The safety and protection of Indonesian energy sector workers serving in high-risk areas has come under increased scrutiny, particularly regarding regions experiencing rising security dynamics in recent weeks, including the Gulf area.

Shanty Alda Nathalia, a member of Commission XII of the Indonesian House of Representatives, stated that energy sector workers, specifically tanker crews operating on international energy distribution routes, play a critical role in maintaining the smooth operation of global energy supply chains. Consequently, their safety must remain a top priority amid the evolving geopolitical situation.

“The safety of Indonesian workers in the energy sector, including Pertamina tanker crews operating in the Gulf region, must be a primary concern amid the developing conflict situation in the area. Particularly, the waters around the Strait of Hormuz represent one of the world’s most strategically important energy distribution routes, and in recent times there has also been an increase in security incidents involving tanker vessels,” Shanty said on Friday, 13 February 2026.

She emphasised that the government, working together with energy shipping operators, must ensure the implementation of strict safety protocols, including continuous security monitoring systems for vessels and crews operating in high-risk areas.

“Therefore, the government together with energy shipping operators must ensure the implementation of strict safety protocols and continuous monitoring of the security situation,” she added.

Shanty also commended PT Pertamina’s (Persero) efforts in continuously monitoring the condition of vessels and crews operating in the region as part of efforts to protect worker safety whilst ensuring the smooth operation of energy distribution.

“I also commend Pertamina’s measures in continuously monitoring the condition of vessels and crews operating in the region. Energy sector workers, including Pertamina tanker crews, represent an important part of the global energy distribution chain, so their safety protection must continue to be ensured amid the escalating conflict dynamics,” she concluded.
