Safeguarding Banyuwangi's Coastal Ecosystem through the Coastal Resilience Initiative
Banyuwangi (ANTARA) — The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP), in collaboration with numerous parties, launched the Coastal Resilience Initiatives programme to protect the coastal ecosystem at the 7th Marine Combat Training Centre (Puslatpurmar) in Lampon, Banyuwangi Regency, East Java, on Monday.
The programme, launched in the Lampon Beach area of Pesanggaran Village and District, is a collaboration between the central government, the East Java Provincial Government, the Banyuwangi Regency Government, business players, the education sector and local communities.
Amehr Hakim, Director of Marine Spatial Planning Development at the KKP, said the programme aligns with the ministry’s blue economy policy principles.
“There are five pillars within it, starting with expanding conservation areas, measured fishing, sustainable aquaculture, the management of coastal areas and small islands, and seas free of waste,” he said.
“We hope that beyond Banyuwangi, we can extend this further to the northern and southern coasts of East Java,” he added.
Banyuwangi Deputy Regent Mujiono added that Banyuwangi has already practised sustainable marine management involving local communities.
He noted that in mid-July 2026, ASEAN and Pacific nations under the ASEAN-ID Blue framework will come to Banyuwangi to share experiences in blue economy development.
“With collaboration among many parties, including companies such as PT BSI and support from the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, we believe the preservation of the marine ecosystem and community welfare will continue to improve,” he said.
The Coastal Resilience Initiatives programme is a long-term investment to build coastal resilience through a balance between environmental conservation, community empowerment and sustainable development.
The programme comprises six initiatives, including mangrove planting, beach forest preservation, coral transplantation, eco-tourism development, increasing fishermen’s incomes, and strengthening fishermen’s institutions so they become more self-reliant.
