Safe Mudik Travel Tips for Children from IDAI
Jakarta — The tradition of mudik (returning to one’s hometown) ahead of Eid al-Fitr is an anticipated occasion for many Indonesian families. However, for parents travelling with young children on long journeys, the health and comfort of children must be a top priority.
Dr Piprim Basarah Yanuarso, Chairman of the Indonesian Paediatric Association (IDAI), emphasised that children require more rest than adults. Therefore, during the mudik journey, parents must ensure their children receive sufficient sleep.
If travelling by private vehicle, Dr Piprim recommended that parents provide special child seats to allow children to sleep comfortably throughout the journey. “Mudik certainly requires extensive preparation, especially when travelling with young children. First, children need significantly more rest than adults, so parents must ensure children can rest comfortably during the journey,” said Dr Piprim during an interview at the Central Vaccination House in East Jakarta on Thursday (12 March 2026).
In addition to rest, children’s fluid intake must also be monitored. Dr Piprim urged parents to ensure children drink sufficient fluids during the journey to prevent dehydration.
“Do not forget to give babies or children water during the journey. Adequate hydration supports children’s health,” he said.
He recommended that parents carry medications that might be needed by children during the journey. Several medications that should be prepared include fever reducers, diarrhoea medication such as oral rehydration salts, and first aid equipment.
