Safe motherhood campaign launched

SEMARANG: The Central Java administration has launched a safe motherhood campaign in 253 districts in the hope of reducing the maternal mortality rate, Antara reported on Tuesday.

Organizer Hartono, who is also vice governor, said the campaign concentrated on raising public awareness of the need to help mothers realize a safe pregnancy and labor.

Various private and government agencies will provide public education on nutrition, early detection of pregnancy irregularities and other related health care requirements.

Indonesia's maternal mortality rate is currently 390 per 100,000 live births. The aim is to reduce the figure to 80 per 100,000 live births by 2015. (swe)
