Safe Migrant Movement Launched to Boost Independence and Welfare of Indonesian Workers

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Migrant Worker Protection Agency (P2MI) has launched the ‘Safe Migrant Movement’ to promote independence and welfare for Indonesian migrant workers (PMI).

“From safe migration, independence and prosperity are born; this is what we call Brain Circulation,” stated P2MI Minister Mukhtarudin during the movement’s launch at the P2MI Ministry in Jakarta on Monday.

In his address, Mukhtarudin emphasised the necessity of safe migration to ensure the protection and safety of migrant workers while they are employed abroad. “Indonesian migrant workers are not merely figures in statistical reports; they are also the economic warriors of their families, willing to leave their loved ones and work hard in foreign lands,” Mukhtarudin said.

Continuing his remarks, Mukhtarudin noted that the contribution of migrant workers cannot be overlooked. According to economic and financial statistics from Bank Indonesia, remittances generated by migrant workers are projected to reach Rp288 trillion by 2025.

“Through their hands, the wheels of the economy turn, villages progress, and this nation gains strength. This positive impact becomes even more evident when remittances are managed productively and sustainably,” he explained.

Many former migrant workers return to the homeland bringing not only income but also experience, skills, and the courage to establish businesses and develop themselves across various sectors, ranging from agriculture and culinary arts to creative industries and education.

The launch of the Safe Migrant Movement was attended by representatives from the Ministry of Manpower, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, the Ministry of Immigration and Correctional Services, as well as vocational training institutions and labour placement associations.
