S. Jakarta Police shoot alleged thief

JAKARTA (JP): South Jakarta Police shot dead a man, who
allegedly attempted to steal a police vehicle, when he later
resisted arrest, the victim's younger brother said yesterday.

Marsiano, alias Nano, was shot twice, once in the chest and
once in his right shoulder.

His brother, Sartiyono said that Nano, from the Bukit Duri
area in South Jakarta, was enjoying his second day of freedom
after being released from Cipinang Rehabilitation Center in East
Jakarta.

Nano had spent two months in jail after being found guilty of
illegally carrying a sharp weapon in a public place.

On Friday evening, Nano and another brother, Erwandi, and an
accomplice, called Ari, tried to stop a patrol officer on Jl.
Sawo Kecik, Bukit Duri, and steal the officer's motorcycle,
Sartiyono quoted police as saying.

But the officer, First Sgt. Cahyono, was able to handle the
three men with the help of colleagues who were passing through
the area.

They were all arrested but Ari managed to escape, Sartiyono
said.

"That was why the police needed Nano at 11:30 p.m. Friday to
help them trace the whereabouts of Ari in the Pancoran area,
where (Nano) was fatally shot after trying to escape from police
custody." (04)
