Ryamizard Ryacudu Passes Away in Jakarta at Age 76
The former Indonesian Defence Minister from 2014 to 2019, retired General Ryamizard Ryacudu, has reportedly passed away on Sunday 31 May afternoon. The news was confirmed by the Head of the Defence Information Bureau (Karo Infohan) of the Ministry of Defence, Colonel (Arm) Rico Ricardo Sirait.
“True, Mr Bachtiar. We have received news that retired General Ryamizard Ryacudu has passed away today, Sunday 31 May 2026 at 14:03 WIB at RSPAD,” Rico stated via text message on Sunday 31 May.
According to gathered information, Ryamizard passed away in the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CICU) of Gatot Soebroto Army Hospital (RSPAD) in Central Jakarta due to illness.
The deceased’s body is currently being transferred from the treatment room to the mortuary at RSPAD’s funeral home.
Regarding military funeral details and subsequent burial arrangements, the relevant institutions and departments are awaiting official decisions and agreement from the late general’s family.
Ryamizard Ryacudu was born in Palembang on 21 April 1950. He grew up in a military family; his father, retired Major General Musannif Ryacudu, was an independence fighter and senior officer closely associated with President Soekarno.
Ryamizard Ryacudu is known as one of the legendary senior military officers with a long career in the Indonesian Army. His military career peaked when he served as Army Chief of Staff (Kasad) from 2002 to 2005.
After retiring from military service, his service to the nation continued in the civilian government. During President Joko Widodo’s first term, he was appointed to a strategic position in the Working Cabinet as Indonesia’s Defence Minister, serving from 27 October 2014 to 20 October 2019. (Faj/P-3)
