Ryamizard Ryacudu Dies, Megawati Mourns: 'Farewell, My Friend'
Former President Megawati Soekarnoputri was seen weeping with emotion as she expressed deep condolences over the death of former Defence Minister Retired General Ryamizard Ryacudu. Megawati remembered the late Ryamizard as a dedicated soldier for the nation and a loyal friend always ready to assist in any situation. ‘I offer my deepest condolences on the passing of Mr Ryamizard Ryacudu. May he find a place of peace with the Almighty, and may his family be granted strength and resilience,’ Megawati said in a statement on Sunday evening (31 May 2026). ‘Farewell, my friend. Thank you for your friendship, service, and contributions to Indonesia,’ she added, overcome with emotion. Megawati noted Ryamizard’s firm, disciplined leadership and unwavering commitment to the people and nation. According to Megawati, Ryamizard’s concern did not cease after he was no longer President. One of the most vivid memories was during the Aceh disaster response. During the Aceh disaster response, after visiting affected communities, Megawati identified an urgent need for a temporary bridge to reconnect isolated areas. Megawati then called Ryamizard, who promptly responded to assist. ‘I still remember when returning from Aceh and seeing the urgent need for a Bailey bridge. I called Mr Ryamizard, who swiftly mobilised the Engineering Battalion to set up the temporary bridge, restoring public access,’ Megawati recalled. Megawati stressed that Ryamizard was a statesman-soldier who demonstrated lifelong loyalty to the nation. ‘Mr Ryamizard was a statesman-soldier. He was steadfast in principle, highly dedicated, and unwavering in his commitment to the country. His life and service epitomised true patriotism,’ she said. These memories and Ryamizard’s attentiveness left a deep impression on Megawati. Ryamizard Ryacudu passed away at the age of 76 at RSPAD hospital in Jakarta on Sunday (31 May 2026) afternoon. He will be buried with military honours at Kalibata Military Cemetery in Jakarta on Monday (1 June 2026).
