Ruteng Shaken by Dozens of Earthquakes, Largest Tremor This Morning Reaches M 5.6
A series of earthquakes has shaken the Ruteng area of Manggarai Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), since Wednesday evening, 19 August 2026. Dozens of tremors were recorded through Thursday morning, 20 August 2026.
According to data shared by the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) via its official X account, the earthquake sequence in the Ruteng area has been ongoing since Wednesday evening.
In the series of quakes, the largest previous tremor was recorded at magnitude 5.7. Seismic activity then continued into Thursday morning with several more earthquakes shaking the area.
The strongest earthquake on Thursday morning was recorded at magnitude 5.6.
The magnitude 5.6 earthquake occurred on Thursday morning at 05:45 WIB. BMKG recorded the epicentre at coordinates 8.30 South Latitude and 120.59 East Longitude.
The earthquake had a depth of 10 kilometres. BMKG confirmed that the quake had no potential to trigger a tsunami.
“No tsunami potential,” BMKG wrote in information shared via its X account.
The tremors were also felt by residents in Manggarai Regency, NTT. According to BMKG records, the earthquake vibrations were felt at intensity III-IV on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale.
This scale indicates that the earthquake shaking could be felt by people in the affected areas.
Seismic activity in the Ruteng area had not ceased after the magnitude 5.6 earthquake occurred. Just one minute later, another earthquake shook the region.
At 05:46 WIB, BMKG recorded an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.8 in the Ruteng area.
The series of tremors is part of the seismic activity that has been ongoing since Wednesday evening. Earthquakes continued to be recorded through Thursday morning with varying magnitudes.
The activity indicates an ongoing earthquake sequence in the Ruteng area of Manggarai Regency.
BMKG again recorded an earthquake in the Ruteng area on Thursday morning. The latest earthquake entered into BMKG records occurred at 06:07 WIB.
The magnitude of the latest earthquake was recorded at 3.2.
Thus, the earthquake sequence in Ruteng has been ongoing from Wednesday evening through Thursday morning. Several earthquakes have been of considerable strength, with the magnitude 5.7 quake recorded as the largest in the earlier sequence, while on Thursday morning the largest tremor reached magnitude 5.6.
