Russia's Su-57 Spotted with New Combat Configuration Amid Evolving Ukraine Threats
Russia’s premier stealth fighter, the Su-57, has been spotted with a new combat configuration amid the ongoing war in Ukraine. Footage circulating online shows the fifth-generation aircraft carrying a combination of weaponry and external devices not previously seen, sparking speculation about a shift in its operational role. In the recording, the Su-57 is seen carrying two infrared-guided R-73/74 short-range air-to-air missiles mounted under its wings. The aircraft also appears to be carrying a pod under the left engine nacelle, suspected to be a new targeting device or a development of an existing system. The configuration is noteworthy because the Su-57 was designed from the outset to carry its armaments in internal weapon bays to maintain its stealth characteristics. Placing missiles and pods externally can increase payload flexibility but potentially raises the aircraft’s radar signature. No official explanation has been given by the Russian Ministry of Defence regarding the new configuration. Some observers suggest the change could be part of testing new systems, evaluating weaponry, or adapting to the evolving operational needs of the battlefield in Ukraine. The emergence of this configuration comes as Russia faces an increasingly intensive long-range strike threat from Ukraine. In recent times, Ukrainian kamikaze drones and cruise missiles have repeatedly struck strategic targets inside Russia, ranging from military airbases and oil refineries to defence industrial facilities and critical infrastructure far from the front lines. One of the most notable incidents occurred in June 2024, when a Ukrainian drone strike reportedly damaged a Su-57 at Akhtubinsk Air Base. The attack served as evidence that even Russia’s most modern air assets are not entirely safe from long-range drone threats. In response to the growing threat, Russia has reportedly accelerated the construction of hardened aircraft shelters and tightened air defence systems around strategic bases. The use of R-73/74 missiles is also considered unusual for the Su-57’s standard configuration. In air superiority missions, the aircraft is more commonly associated with radar-guided medium-range air-to-air missiles like the R-77-1. Consequently, some analysts suspect this latest configuration may be optimised for engaging smaller, harder-to-detect targets, such as low-flying drones or cruise missiles. However, there has been no official confirmation regarding the purpose of this configuration. Further attention is focused on the pod mounted on the left side of the fuselage. Its shape bears a resemblance to the 101KS-N navigation and targeting pod but shows several differences in its external design. This has led to speculation that the device is a new variant designed to enhance airborne target identification capabilities, complementing the Su-57’s existing radar and infrared sensors.
