JAKARTA - Russia’s State Nuclear Energy Corporation (Rosatom) met with the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, at the Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday (12/5/2026).

“On 12 May 2026, the Director General of the State Corporation Rosatom, Alexey Likhachev, as part of his working visit to the Republic of Indonesia, held a working meeting with the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto,” Rosatom stated in its press release on Tuesday.

Rosatom revealed that both parties discussed promising areas of Russia-Indonesia cooperation in the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, including the development of nuclear power projects, nuclear infrastructure, personnel training, and applications of nuclear technology outside the energy sector.

“Indonesia has currently set ambitious goals for nuclear energy development, and therefore we not only discussed technology but also the formation of long-term partnerships focused on developing new industries for the country, training national personnel, emerging new competencies, and strengthening the country’s technological sovereignty,” he said.

Rosatom stated its readiness to offer Indonesia a comprehensive approach to developing its national nuclear programme, including large-scale nuclear power solutions, as well as projects involving small modular reactors and floating power units.

The parties also paid special attention to the integration of nuclear energy into Indonesia’s power system, taking into account the specifics of the country’s archipelagic geography.

The meeting was also attended by the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia, the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), PT PLN, and the Chairman of the Regional Representative Council (DPD RI).

The year 2026 marks the 20th anniversary of the Intergovernmental Agreement on Cooperation in the Peaceful Use of Atomic Energy.

The agreement was signed on 1 December 2006 and laid the foundation for bilateral cooperation between Russia and Indonesia in the nuclear industry.
