Russian rafters to test Jambi river

JAMBI: A Russian rafting team will try to ride the famous Batang Merangin river in Sorolangun Bangko, Jambi, on Jan. 1 in a tourist promotion campaign.

Zainul Imron, district chief of Sorolangun Bangko, said the Russian team would observe and study the river's conditions to make a promotion brochure on the river as a venue for rafting.

"The river is already well known in several countries for its strong currents and waves, a condition which makes it suitable for rafting," he said as quoted by Antara.

In the future, he said, Batang Merang will be used for national and international rafting competitions. A national rafting competition will be held there from Feb. 15 to Feb. 20. (mds)
