Russian Missile Breaches 'Gateway' of NATO, Creates Massive Crater in Poland
The situation in Eastern Europe is on the brink of a dangerous escalation after a cruise missile, suspected to be Russian, successfully penetrated NATO’s gateway and fell approximately 90 kilometres inside Polish territory on Thursday morning (30/07/2026). The missile explosion struck an open area near the village of Tarnawa-Kolonia in Lublin Province, triggering a massive blast and leaving a giant crater in a farmer’s field.
During an emergency government meeting, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed that the projectile violating the NATO alliance’s airspace was identified as a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile. Tusk stressed that the military had actually been prepared to shoot down the projectile if it had continued its flight, while continuously coordinating the emergency situation with NATO’s high command.
“All indications show that the projectile was a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile. We were prepared to shoot down the missile if it continued its flight, and NATO commanders are being continuously updated,” Prime Minister Tusk asserted.
The NATO airspace breach occurred simultaneously with Moscow launching a massive aerial assault hitting various regions across Ukraine. The Polish Army confirmed it had scrambled and deployed its fighter jets after observing at least a dozen missiles flying over western Ukraine, potentially threatening the security of Polish territory.
Russia’s Defence Ministry confirmed it launched a large-scale strike using high-precision long-range weapons from land, air, and sea, along with attack drones, targeting military objectives in Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated the barrage involved more than 70 missiles and 280 drones, of which 260 drones were intercepted amid an air defence ammunition crisis.
The massive Russian bombardment of Ukraine killed at least eight people, including children, and injured dozens of other civilians. In the village of Radushne near the city of Kryvyi Rih, a ballistic missile destroyed a residential home, killing a married couple and their three children, aged five and twelve.
In the capital Kyiv and the Poltava region, the air strikes damaged dozens of homes, business facilities, and energy infrastructure, killing civilians. Hundreds of families were forced to flee and sleep inside Kyiv metro stations using makeshift tents to shelter from the bombing.
“There are children here, many children. We have pulled out one child and there are still others lying under the rubble,” said an eyewitness at the scene in Radushne, broadcast in an emergency video.
Rescue workers in the city of Lviv were also racing against time to save residents trapped beneath the rubble of destroyed residential buildings. The barrage of strikes came just two days after President Zelensky’s visit to the White House to request additional air defence systems from US President Donald Trump.
Meanwhile, Ukraine launched a retaliatory drone strike that set ablaze a logistics warehouse belonging to the Russian e-commerce giant Wildberries in the city of Penza on Thursday. Penza Governor Oleg Melnichenko confirmed one person was injured and that around 200 employees were evacuated from the facility. Ukraine has consistently targeted Wildberries distribution centres, which it considers the Russian equivalent of Amazon, claiming they are used to supply military forces. Kyiv asserts these are legitimate military targets, a charge Moscow denies.
