Russian Fighter Jets Suddenly Approach British Aircraft Carrier, Drop This
British military authorities reported that their aircraft carrier operating in the Norwegian Sea was repeatedly approached by Russian maritime patrol aircraft. The dangerous incident forced the British fleet to scramble two advanced fighter jets to escort and drive the Russian planes out of the operational area.
According to a Reuters report, the provocative incident, which Britain described as ‘unsafe and unprofessional’, occurred on Thursday. The Russian maritime patrol aircraft, a ‘Bear-F’, was reported to have flown at low altitude and passed very close to the HMS Prince of Wales.
The HMS Prince of Wales is currently at the centre of a combat formation known as a carrier strike group. While manoeuvring near the British carrier, the Russian aircraft also dropped a large number of underwater tracking devices.
‘The Bear-F… dropped a large number of sonobuoys in very close proximity to the carrier,’ the UK Ministry of Defence said in an official statement regarding the electronic devices commonly used to detect and track submarines.
In response to the threatening provocation, the command of HMS Prince of Wales immediately scrambled two F-35 stealth fighters. The two jets conducted a tight interception and escorted the Russian military aircraft until it was confirmed to have left the British operational area.
The British carrier strike group is currently deployed under the direct command of the NATO alliance in the High North region. This massive deployment of the combat fleet is part of Western efforts to strengthen North Atlantic security amid concerns over increasing Russian military aggression in the region.
Tensions in these waters are reported to be soaring and risk triggering a much wider military escalation between the NATO bloc and Russia. Moreover, this air interception incident broke out ahead of the NATO summit meeting in Ankara on Tuesday, where alliance members are preparing to pledge €70 billion in military aid for Ukraine throughout 2026.
Earlier this year, Britain had also deployed its military vessels to prevent potential sabotage attacks on strategic underwater cables and energy pipelines by Russian submarines. This high alert was implemented after a number of Russian submarines were found to have spent more than a month inside and around British territorial waters.
In a separate statement released on Monday, the UK Ministry of Defence added that Defence Minister Dan Jarvis had just conducted an official working visit. Jarvis visited British military personnel serving aboard the HMS Prince of Wales while sailing in waters near Iceland.
